References

References are people who can attest to your suitability for your chosen health profession.  Almost all health professions applications require references and it's never too early to start thinking about who will write them.

A good reference can really help your application – and a bad reference can really hurt your application – so it's important to choose them wisely.  While some professions have strict guidelines as to who can write them, many are flexible.

In general, science faculty, healthcare experience supervisors, research supervisors, and people within the profession you want to enter are great options.  Many professions will also accept mentors, non-science instructors, and non-healthcare supervisors.  Regardless of who you ask to write your reference, they need to know you well enough to write a meaningful letter on your behalf.

Once someone has agreed to write a reference for you, they may ask for a copy of your resume/curriculum vitae and/or your application essay/personal statement.  This helps them know you better so they can write the best letter possible.

Give them plenty of time to write your letter.  Make sure your writers have all the materials they need at least two months ahead of your deadline date.
