Dentists  diagnose and treat oral health problems, including diseases of the teeth, gums, and mouth. They provide preventive care like cleanings and X-rays, perform restorative work such as fillings and crowns, and advise patients on maintaining good oral hygiene and diet. References: UMKC requires a minimum of three letters of recommendation or one pre-health advisory committee letter is required. If there is not a pre-health advisory committee at least one letter from a faculty member and one from a dentist is required.  

Shadowing Experience: UMKC highly recommends candidates observe in a minimum of 3 or more different dental offices (the offices of general dentists and specialists) and acquire a minimum of 80-100 hours of dental office observation or dental work experience.  This is consistent with other schools in the region.  

Volunteer Experience: UMKC recommends active and ongoing participation in 3 or more volunteer activities to show evidence of social conscience and compassion (i.e., caring attitude, sensitivity to those in need, significant community activities). 

Research Experience: Not required.  

Pre-Admission Standardized Tests: Dental Admissions Test (DAT); UMKC strongly encourages applicants to take the Computer-based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics (CASper) because it's required for students who are invited to an interview  

Student Organizations: University of Kansas Pre-Dental Society, International Pre-Health Sciences Organization, Delta Epsilon Mu (co-ed healthcare fraternity), University of Kansas Women in Medicine, Future Leaders in Healthcare
