Cardiovascular Sonography

Cardiovascular sonographers work with physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with heart and blood vessel conditions. This may also include assisting with other diagnostic procedures, patient care and the maintenance of ultrasound equipment

Cardiovascular Sonography at a Glance

  • Core 34 Pre-Admission Coursework: Check Sheet (PDF), Accessible Check Sheet (PDF)
  • References: Two academic or professional references are required for KU’s program. A third may be from someone who knows the student outside of the classroom or work setting.
  • Shadowing Experience or Introductory Course: At KU, students are required to complete a minimum of eight hours shadowing a cardiovascular sonographer. At least four hours must be from observing adult echocardiography AND four hours must be from either pediatric echocardiography or vascular sonography.
  • Healthcare Experience: Beyond the required shadowing hours, additional healthcare and direct patient care experience is recommended but not required.
  • Community Service/Leadership Experience: Recommended.
  • Research Experience: Not required.
  • Pre-Admission Standardized Tests: KU does not require any pre-admission tests.
  • Student Organizations: International Pre-Health Sciences Organization, Delta Epsilon Mu (co-ed healthcare fraternity), University of Kansas Women in Medicine, Future Leaders in Healthcare
