Dentists diagnose and treat problems with patients’ teeth, gums, and related parts of the mouth. They provide advice and instruction on taking care of the teeth and gums and on diet choices that affect oral health.

References: UMKC requires three letters and has no specific requirements as to who can write them.  Some schools require letters from science faculty and/or dentists. 

Shadowing Experience: UMKC highly recommends at least 100 hours in five different settings.  This is consistent with other schools in the region. 

Healthcare Experience: UMKC highly recommends working, volunteering, and/or shadowing dentists for at least 100 hours.  This may be combined with the shadowing experience above to get to 100 hours. 

Community Service/Leadership Experience: UMKC highly recommends at least 100 hours in five different settings.  This is consistent with other schools in the region. 

Research Experience: Not required. 

Pre-Admission Standardized Tests: Dental Admissions Test (DAT); UMKC strongly encourages applicants to take the Computer-based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics (CASper) – it's required for students who are invited to an interview 

Student Organizations: University of Kansas Pre-Dental Society, International Pre-Health Sciences Organization, Delta Epsilon Mu (co-ed healthcare fraternity), University of Kansas Women in Medicine, Future Leaders in Healthcare
